The Solukhumbu (Solu) region of Nepal where lies the Mt. Everest ( 8,848 m ) has been a magnet for travelers ever since its opening to foreigners in 1950. This region is famous not only for its proximity to the world’s highest mountain but also for its Sherpa villages and monasteries with their virtually unchanged unique culture. First climbed in 1953, Everest still holds a fascination for many; however the Everest region boasts many more spectacular and beautiful mountains, as well as some of the most rewarding trekking anywhere in the world. The Everest Base Camp trek is a classic trek which follows in the footsteps of Hillary & Tenzing and ends with an ascent of Kala Pattar for superb views of Everest. Kala Patthar is also known as black rock. Before reaching the Everest Base camp, the trail follows the Khumbu Glacier with huge ice pinnacles soaring to unbelievable height.
Sagarmatha National Park, established in 1976, covers much of this region. This fascinating land surrounded by high mountains is a real paradise for mountaineers & trekkers.
One can fly to Lukla from Kathmandu or get bus to Jiri to get there. Trek from Jiri to Lukla is a classic trek and best way to acclimatize as well. Gokyo and the Everest Base Camp are the two trekking routes where many people like to go.
